The best adjustable dumbbells for your home workout in 2019

This new type of dumbbells will make your workout so much more convenient.

If you’re using dumbbells to work on building muscle or strength, then over time you’ll need to increase the weight of the dumbbells you lift. That means that over time you’ll need to buy more and more dumbbells to cope with your muscles getting stronger.

Buying more dumbbells will there increase your cost, the hassle that involved with purchasing new dumbbells and the space you’ll need for storing all the dumbbells that you buy.

Thanks to the age we live in and evolving technology there’s now a great dumbbells alternative to help you save on the costs, hassle and storage space when it comes to acquiring dumbbells for your home workouts. These are of course the adjustable dumbbells.

What are Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable dumbbells are a single pair of dumbbells that includes a handle and a set of weights. You can adjust the weight of adjustable dumbbells by removing or adding weights to the handle of your dumbbells set.

The minimum and maximum weight of your dumbbells will depend on the set that you buy. The way of adjusting the weight on your dumbbells will also be determined by the type of set that you buy, which makes it crucial to choose a set that is easy to adjust.

Which is the Best Adjustable Dumbbell Set

There is a wide variety of adjustable dumbbells types out there but only 2 leading manufacturers that offer a consistent value that should be looked at:

1. Bowflex – With the Selecttech 552 and 1090 dumbbells.

2. Powerblock – With the elite dumbbells.

Since 2 main issues make the Powerblock dumbbells less attractive (at least in our opinion):

1. They are relatively more complicated to adjust the weight in this pair

2. The block shape might limit some of the exercises you can do and overall makes the whole workout experience a bit less “gym-like”.

Our chosen pair of adjustable dumbbells is the bowflex selecttech 552.

Bowflex SelectTech 552

As mentioned, the are 2 versions of Bowflex the Selecttech 552 and 1090.

• 552 – Where you can adjust the weight from 5 to 52.5 pounds (2-24 kg)

• 1090 – Where you can adjust the weight from 10 to 90 pounds (4-40 kg)

The Selecttech 552 will there be recommended for most standard users (professional sportspeople or bodybuilders will normally be training in the gym anyway).

On a note – Beware: There is a large number of suppliers out there that came up with their own sets (calling it different names) which looks similar to the Bowflex dumbbells. These aren’t the Bowflex and aren’t as good as the Selecttech 552 and 1090 Bowflex dumbbells.

Bowflex Dumblles Pros & Cons

Pros

Saving space – Removes the need to store 30 dumbbells.

Overall cost – If you had to buy 30 pairs dumbbells that would be cost more than buying the bowflex.

Workout flow – Back in the days you needed to unscrew a ring to change the weight on a dumbbells set. Now when you need to change weights during your workout do it simply in seconds by a turn of a dial.

Range of Exercises – These are just like standard weights and doesn’t limit the movement during your workout so you can do literally any exercise.

Durability – The way they feel and due to vast majority of reviews the bowflex selecttech 552  are a durable pair of dumbbells.

Warranty– If you get them through here they come with a 2 year warranty.

Cons

Slightly bigger than normal dumbbells –  They’re slightly bigger than you’d expect form a set of dumbbells to be.

A bit pricey – Cheaper than buying 30 dumbbells, still the initial investment in one set is a bit pricey.

Not entirely silent – If you make the weights twist they do make some small clicking noise. Not the end of the world, they’re just not completely quiet like normal gym dumbbells.

Despite their few disadvantages, the bowflex selecttech 552 would still save the space, hassle, and money when it comes to acquiring dumbbells for your daily workout.

They make every workout session as convenient as it gets and solves the of working with different weights. A problem that anyone who ever worked out in a gym has been most probably facing.

Portability

While it’s easier to carry around these 2 sets of these bowflex selecttech dumbbells than carrying 15 sets of regular dumbbells, these still weigh 52 pounds (24 kg) each, so better be most of the time left in one place.

Except for some models of water-filled dumbbells that we can’t recommend, there is yet any type of dumbbells that you could conveniently carry around with you while traveling around the world.

For working out on the go you might want to have a look at some alternatives like working out with trx like suspension trainers, or workout bands

You can also engage in workout programs via mobile apps and videos on youtube.

My favorite workout guru is the one and only Jillian Michaels. Who is also known for her appearance on the NBC show The Biggest Loser and for a good reason got the impressive IMDB rating of 8.7 for her 30-day Shred workout program and others.

Most of Jillian Michaels’ classes have been recently removed from youtube for an unknown reason, but you still might find some of her videos online in sites like dailymotion.

Her great programs you can also find on Amazon (now on sale) – Watch Here.

In conclusion

The Bowflex Selecttech 552 adjustable dumbbells are a great choice if you’d like to work out at home and feel like you’re in the gym. They give you everything you need for a convenient, dynamic and flexible workout session. They come with a reasonable price tag compared to the number of dumbbells that they replace, are easier to carry around and saves on storage space.
